Koa Academy Expands into Kenya: Bringing Personalized, Online Education to One of Africa’s Fastest-Growing Markets

At Anza Capital, we believe in the power of African-led innovation to solve critical challenges and unlock potential. That’s why we’re excited to share that our portfolio company, Koa Academy, is expanding into Kenya — a country at the forefront of education reform and digital transformation on the continent.

Why Kenya, Why Now?

Kenya is one of Africa’s youngest nations, with over 50% of its population under the age of 19. This demographic presents both a challenge and an enormous opportunity: how to deliver quality education at scale in a way that equips learners with the skills they need to thrive in a fast-changing world.

Today, more than 16 million Kenyan learners are enrolled in primary and secondary education. The government is driving ambitious reforms, including the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) — a shift towards personalized, skills-based learning. Coupled with 131.5% mobile penetration and increasing internet access, the foundations are in place for a major leap forward in how education is delivered.

This transformation has opened the door for new models of learning that are technology-enabled, flexible, and responsive to the needs of modern families. The rise of the urban middle class, alongside persistent gaps in the public education system, is fuelling interest in private schools that offer smaller classesinternationally accredited curricula, and engaging, real-world learning experiences.

Koa’s Model: Built for 21st Century Learning

Koa Academy meets this moment with a learning model that is both innovative and proven. As a fully online, internationally accredited school, Koa uses a pod school approach to create a high-engagement, low-distraction environment where every learner is seen and supported.

Students at Koa benefit from:

  • Personalized instruction that meets them where they are
  • Real-world relevance in what they’re learning
  • Flexible schedules that support holistic development
  • A broad range of extracurricular activities to explore their interests and nurture their unique talents

With its expansion into Kenya, Koa Academy will be able to serve a growing base of learners who are ready for a different kind of education — one that prepares them not just for exams, but for life.

Our Perspective

As investors, we’re proud to back startups like Koa that are building inclusivescalable, and impact-driven solutions for Africa’s future. Education remains one of the most powerful levers for change — and Kenya is showing what’s possible when policy, technology, and innovation come together.

Koa’s entry into Kenya is more than a market expansion; it’s a step toward redefining what quality education looks like in the digital age.

We’re thrilled to support this journey.
